The main purpose of marine geology laboratory of Applied Research Center of Karaj is to study and design the sedimentology maps of Iran's sea beds. This laboratory consists of a preparation unit which samples are prepared using desalting separation technique. Then, samples are delivered into sedimentology laboratory and after weighting, they are allowed to settle for 24 hours. Then, samples are separated using wet chemistry method in an ultrasonic bath. Note that grains larger than 63 micron and grains smaller than 63 micron are separated by sieve shaker & laser particle sizer, respectively. Ultimately, statistics parameters of sediments are calculated. Note that tissue and form of sediments are studied by binoculars and percentage of clastic carbonates is determined, too.
Second Sector of Laboratories–Management of Laboratories (Workflow of sample)
Due to the internationality of Applied Research Center of Geological Survey of Iran, the introduction of laboratory services of this center in the world which are offered mechanically is very important. This laboratory sector was established to provide a proper opportunity to increase speed & accuracy, reduce the research costs, facilitate the laboratories services, make easier to pay costs for delivery of samples to be analyzed and customers aware of hierarchy of sample analysis at a same time. Generally, the honorable users can have the best access to all laboratory services mechanically. Companies, individuals and all others which have request to analyze samples by means of facilities of this center can deliver the completed form of samples to be analyzed manually or mail them. By means of a username and password, individuals can be aware of the sample analysis process as well as the results of samples analysis through the network.
Third Sector of laboratories- Laboratories Database
According that Applied Geological Research Center of Karaj is an international laboratory center and has purposes for exchanging laboratory information, database of geological laboratories has been established. This laboratory database offers complete information about laboratory sciences such as applied laboratories of geosciences, sample preparation, sampling, Uranium, etc. The forth- coming purposes of this sector is to expand laboratory information about different databases such as cement & gold laboratories database as well as processing laboratories databases.
Gemology Laboratories:
Because gemstones are very precious, attractive and trace stones, the identification, categorization and evaluation of gemstones has been considered by human since long time ago. One of the issues should be argued for mineral & stones are the identification of precious and semi precious stones (gemology) & cutting them.
Purposes of Gemology Laboratory:
- A scientific view on gemology
- Minerals & precious stones identification
- Scientific methods for distinguishing synthesis & natural gemstones
- Gemology application on different industries & sciences
- Great center for cutting & preparing gemstones
- Proper opportunity for economic activities

Gemology is one of the modern sciences of gem industries used for categorization, identification, qualification and evaluation of gem stones on jewelries. In the past time, there were some geologists qualified to identify & evaluate gems. But since first of 20th century, the demand for gemological services has grown because of different progresses (such as manufacturing & increasing quantities of synthesis gemstones and/or different methods of gemstones processing) and growing commercial trade of gems on international levels. There are different branches of gemology with special standards which were accepted on international level. Currently, this science similar to the other branches of science has increasingly developed. Therefore, one of the most important issues should be considered is that all users should be aware of the latest market changes and related news & events. Precious stones have a wide range of application for manufacturing jewelries which are unknown in Iran, yet. Because the added value caused by proper processing & trade of gemstones is a few hundred times more than first value, manufacturing gemstones can be very economically beneficial. The other advantages of this industry are to create job opportunities and require very low investment for processing. On the other hand, due to the technology developments & manufacturing synthesis gemstones very similar to natural stones, distinguishing between them is now more difficult. In addition, most of gemstones have a wide range of application on different industries & sciences which has been neglected in our country. To achieve the above- mentioned goals, Applied Research center of Geological Survey of Iran makes efforts to establish gemology laboratories.
